When many people hear “hemp,” they don’t think of how it can positively affect their body. But in reality, there are many remarkable benefits for dogs (and humans) in the compounds found naturally in hemp.
All too often hemp is seen as another word for the drug. The truth is that while hemp is a species within the cannabis sativa plant genus, it is indeed quite different from the drug producing plant which is a different plant all together – and as such, it has a very different compound profile. Hemp (like all cannabis sativa plants) produces compounds that may support joint health and reduce stress. But it does not have the psychoactive compound – meaning you (or your dog) do not get high off hemp. Lacking the drug also means hemp and hemp compound products are completely legal – which is exactly why you’ve probably seen hemp products like protein powder or non-dairy milk on your grocer’s shelves. And indeed why we’re able to ship Therabis to all 50 states and internationally.
Hemp oil in your dog
We bet you didn’t know that your dog’s body – and in fact all humans and animals – is currently creating its own compounds within a lesser known but major bodily system called the endocannabinoid system. As a central regulatory system, the endocannabinoid system regulates major functions like appetite, mood and sleep.
Hemp compounds interact with receptors on cells of the brain and immune system. Like a key fitting into a lock and opening a door, hemp compounds bind to a receptor on a cell, potentially triggering changes in the cell’s function. These changes may stop the production and release of inflammatory messenger molecules, change activity of certain regions of the brain, and/or change the amount of blood flow to regions of the body – which can produce the effects of dramatically reduced inflammation, relieving pain, relieving gastric distress, stimulating appetite, or reducing anxiety.
So the next time you see a hemp oil product in your grocery store, or hear about a hemp product online fear not – the product is legal, your dog won’t get high and in fact there are a lot of benefits that can come from it, thanks in part to hemp compound’s action on the inflammatory system and neurological system.
